He was a former president of the South African Institute of Civil Engineering and served as Vice President and board member of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
In 2009, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences from the University of the Witwatersrand and the International Medal of the Institute of Civil Engineers in 2010 for his contribution to the creation of infrastructure.
He worked as a construction site engineer and civil engineer during the first decade of his career. For the next twenty years, he worked as a construction consultant and civil engineer. Over the past few years, he has been working with public sector clients on infrastructure projects.
