Since 1981, Professor Katzenbach has been working as a Consulting Engineer in the field of geotechnics, simultaneously conducting scientific research and participating in numerous major national and international projects. For example, he was actively involved in checking the reliability of the structures of Germany's tallest skyscraper, the Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt, Russia's tallest building, the Federation Tower in Moscow, as well as the world's tallest skyscraper, 1007 m in Jeddah / Saudi Arabia.

In 1993, Professor Katzenbach was appointed Director of the Research Institute of Geotechnics at the Technical University of Darmstadt, and since that time he has been the head of the Department of Geotechnics. In the same year, he founded his own private consulting company, which he heads together with his partners Professor Vogler and engineer Seip (Dipl.-Ing. Seip).
