Background

Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Professor; accredited expert in the scientific and technical field of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation (Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation).

• In 1971, he graduated with honors from Moscow State University with a degree in Geological Surveying and Prospecting for Mineral Deposits. In the period 1965-1971, he worked as a laboratory assistant, senior laboratory assistant, and then as an engineer at the Institute of Mineralogy, Geochemistry, and Crystal Chemistry of Rare Elements of the USSR Ministry of Geology.
• In 1971, he entered the postgraduate program at the O.Y. Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
• In 1974, he defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Geological Sciences.
• In 1974, he was hired permanently by the staff of the Institute of Physics and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where over the years he held the positions of junior, senior, and leading researcher.
• In 1990, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Geological Sciences.)".
• Since 1993, he held the position of head of the Laboratory of Seismotectonics, and then of the Laboratory of Earthquake Forecasting Methods.
• Since 2001, he has held the position of Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the O.Y. Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
• Research interests: the main field is seismotectonics, tectonics of strong earthquake foci; other fields are modern geodynamics; earthquake forecasting, seismic hazard assessment, seismic zoning.
