A record achievement in concreting the foundation slab of the Lakhta Center

The filling of the lower foundation plate of the high-rise building of the Lakhta Center complex has been completed in St. Petersburg. In the process of continuous concreting, 19,624 m3 of concrete mix was laid in 49 hours, which exceeds the Guinness World record by three thousand cubic meters.

One of the technical features of the future skyscraper with a height of 462 meters and a weight of 670 thousand tons is a box-shaped foundation. It consists of two powerful structures. The upper slab is 2 m high, the lower one is 3.6 m, more than the height of a standard floor, the most difficult to manufacture, has the shape of an equilateral pentagon, with an area of 5,670 m2. The strength of the plate is provided by 15 levels of rebar grids with a diameter of 32 mm. The reinforcement required 9.2 thousand tons of metal supplied from metal rolling mills throughout Russia.  For comparison, it took about that much to build the Eiffel Tower.

The Lakhta Center is a multifunctional social and business complex, the core of which will be the headquarters of the Gazprom Group of companies. The total area of buildings and structures will be 400,000 m2. The construction of the complex is planned to be completed by 2018.

The Lakhta Center project was presented at the 100+ Forum Russia 2014 as part of the round table "Green High-rise Construction. Energy-efficient skyscraper. LEED/BREEAM certification".  The moderator of the meeting, Sergey Nikiforov, the chief engineer of the project, made a presentation on the testing of energy efficiency technologies in the northern regions.
