Experts discussed the use of steel structures in unique structures

Yesterday, a joint webinar 100+ TechoBuild and JSC SIC Stroitelstvo (V.A. Kucherenko Central Research Institute) took place, which brought together the largest number of participants in the history of 100+ webinars: almost 400 people have already watched the webinar at two sites.

Candidate of Technical Sciences Alexey Krylov gave practical examples of testing and calculations of beams with rigid reinforcement. Against the background of a 20-year almost complete lack of research on steel-reinforced concrete structures working on bending, experiments were conducted at the V.A. Kucherenko Central Research Institute, which made it possible to compile unique practical recommendations for modeling potential wear and deformation of structures. The beams, columns and floors were tested using reinforced steel concrete with rigid reinforcement on structures used in the construction of the most modern buildings in the country: the Lakhta Center in St. Petersburg, the Eurasia Tower in Moscow City, and also previously used in Stalin's skyscrapers.

Unique studies were conducted on the features of operation of compressed-bendable welded pipes made of high-strength steels, as described by Alexander Olurombi. According to the expert, the results of practical tests showed a strong discrepancy with the initial calculations: 10-15% in the direction of lower pipe stability. Today, such structures are increasingly used in the construction of stadiums, and the technology will also be used in the construction of the Moscow Sun Ferris wheel, which will become the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, surpassing even the famous LondonEye in diameter.

Candidate of Technical Sciences Mikhail Farfel showed the advantages of membrane panel coatings over traditional types of steel frames for buildings with spans up to 60 meters using specific examples. Membrane structures are traditionally used for large–span structures, and the use of membranes for buildings with spans of less than 60 meters is a promising new technology. For example, the Olympic Stadium and the Krylatskoye Ice Palace were built using membrane coatings.

The greatest response from the participants was caused by an analysis of typical errors in the design of load-bearing structures of multi-storey and high-rise buildings from Denis Konin, Candidate of Technical Sciences. Inaccuracies in the design of load-bearing structures of multi-storey and high-rise buildings using steel can lead to a significant increase in the cost of the project, since often the weight of metal structures is not fully taken into account, these errors in the volume of steel can be up to 50%. The expert elaborated on each mistake and described their consequences in different scenarios.

The webinar opened the cycle of online meetings of construction industry specialists in 2021, keep an eye on the schedule.
