Opera and Ballet Theater in Sevastopol | The Metropolis Company
The Opera and Ballet Theater building is located on a plot of land located in the Leninsky district of Sevastopol, on the shore of Alexandrovskaya Bay.
The construction site has a significant height difference (up to 20.0 m) with a decrease in relief towards the bay. The border of the coastal part is characterized by the presence of a steep coastal cliff.
The Opera and Ballet Theater building confidently fits into the existing landscape and forms an ensemble with the adjacent memorial, to which it adjoins.
An elegant, wide-span, flying roof covers the opera house, located between Kapitanskaya Street in the south and the seashore in the north. From the street, the opera house can be accessed through a spacious entrance.
The heart of the project is located in the center of the building: an auditorium for 1,100 visitors, including a stage tower and utility rooms.
Additional functions such as offices, VIP rooms, and rehearsal rooms are located in a circular structure called the Belt. The belt covers the hall and is also functionally connected to it. The foyer area surrounding the auditorium provides a public and open space that spans both sides of the auditorium to the restaurant and the public terrace.
The public space is fully glazed from the outside and offers a breathtaking view of the 40-meter Soldier and Sailor Memorial and the Black Sea. As the basement extends to the bay, it forms a cantilevered terrace that soars above the steeply sloping landscape. The restaurant and the terrace are available to visitors at any time.
The spatial planning solution of the projected Opera and Ballet Theater is a building of complex geometric shape, with stained glass facades around the perimeter, with an open, operated terrace with a length of more than 20 m protruding towards the sea, which makes the theater's image unique.
The roof of the building is designed as a single structure on metal supports with overhanging edges on all sides and the removal of a canopy over the main entrance and a canopy over the terrace in the bow. The building has a relatively symmetrical, curved, streamlined shape, framed on both sides by external stairs leading to the terrace. Approximate overall dimensions of the plan with an entrance canopy and a terrace: 124.8 x 207.0 m.
Architectural and artistic solutions reflect the trends of advanced deconstructivist architecture with a dynamic layout of building volumes, decorative elements of the facades, modern exterior materials and create a single "flying" image of the temple of opera and ballet art. The elements and parts of the facade of the theater are characteristic of the style: deformation of shapes, broken lines, asymmetry, distortion, displacement of parts of the building.
The innovative component in terms of architectural solutions consists in a combination of junctions of curved shapes made of different materials, as well as in the presence of a curved multilayer roofing shell, where the facing facade panels made of fibreglass are located with an indentation from the waterproofing coating and drainage system, creating a smoothness of the basic shape.
