Kalinin Historical Quarter in Chernyakhovsk, Kaliningrad region | M4 Design Bureau
The creation of a single continuous walking cycling and hiking route within the territory under consideration has become a connecting element of two large green areas: Victory Park and the coastal area of the city lakes. A closed network has been created inside the quarter, all existing and newly created public spaces are connected. Moreover, all the existing residential courtyards in the block are interconnected. At the same time, several main dominants of the quarter and well-maintained, interconnected spaces of residential courtyards were created.
Careful work with the historical heritage has been carried out in balance with the creation of relevant zones.
The paving of the streets and central squares of the city, on many streets, has been almost completely preserved. Besides its historical and aesthetic value, multi-lane paving has real practical value. Strips of varying types of pavement cover guarantee a variety and high pedestrian comfort in different weather conditions. The historical paving stones have been preserved. The bike paths were made of smooth large-format tiles. A special feature is the navigation built into the bike path surface. Storm sewers have been installed along roads and sidewalks, and new hatches with the city's coat of arms have been installed. Stupopanduses have been installed on the relief areas, and standard road signs along the driveways have been replaced with reduced ones.
Historical elements were taken into account when choosing coloristic solutions: brick facades, clinker roofs, natural stone sidewalks and cast-iron lanterns. The project also took into account the climatic features of the territory, which is characterized by prolonged rainy weather, in connection with which suitable types of coverings were selected, a large number of shelters and canopies were arranged.
Thanks to the project, several new recreation areas have been created in the center of Chernyakhovsk, each of which is neatly integrated into the urban context. A park has been landscaped on Kalinin Street, where a memorial stone is located in honor of Peter the Great's visit. Benches and new lighting were installed around it, and a map of the historic city center appeared in the center of the square. Canopies appeared in the area of the city court building: city exhibitions are held there. Nearby there are wooden cube gazebos with information about Immanuel Kant. All commercial sites and parking areas are evenly distributed within the block. Zones of residential courtyards are separately allocated.
Comprehensive work synchronized with other urban development processes
Thanks to the implementation of comprehensive landscaping of the Kalinin quarter in Chernyakhovsk, such processes as gasification of residential buildings, major repairs of houses, and landscaping of adjacent territories of the quarter under the FCGS program were synchronized. The adjacent territories were repaired, trees and shrubs were planted, communications were updated, and residential buildings in the block were gasified. In addition, this project has transformed the appearance of the historic quarter, which motivated the owners of many houses along the reconstructed streets to overhaul the facades and bring the signage on the facades to a uniform style.
Currently, the historic quarter is a popular vacation destination for residents and visitors of the city. Landscaping frames a unique low-rise building, immersing those walking through it in the atmosphere of the old city. An integrated approach to the development of territories has allowed not only to solve infrastructural problems, but also to form a number of new investment sites that will effectively affect the development and preservation of the structure of the historical center of Chernyakhovsk — Kalinin quarter.
