NETWORK OF OPEN LABORATORIES "MODERN ROOFS"

The main idea of the project is to create a network of open laboratories in different climatic zones of Russia in order to be able to monitor the processes taking place on green roofs and how they affect the climate in cities.

Filling of laboratories:

1. At least two experimental installations.
2. The installation is assembled from aluminum sheets, a pie for roofing landscaping is placed inside, an extensive/intensive substrate is filled in and sedum (Sedum spp.) and/or plants characteristic of this climatic zone are planted.
3. Equipment used: sensors for measuring soil moisture and temperature, weather station, lysimeter/sedimentation meter.

These laboratories are compact, all materials are manufactured by the Sayan group, and sensors can transmit information via the Internet. Such a laboratory can be installed on any flat roof.

To popularize the topic of green roofs, the most effective type of open laboratory with access for all citizens seems to be. It is important that laboratories in our case are perceived by the public as a natural part of modern life in the city. Such laboratories can be created in public spaces, modern residential complexes, shopping malls and multifunctional complexes.

The OL 1 pilot project was launched in 2022. The open laboratory is located on the roof of a low-rise building in Moscow on the basis of the Sayan Group company. As part of OL 1, the main functions of future laboratories are being tested in order to further improve and scale.

Thus, as a result of the launch of the laboratory network,:

• The data, unique for Russia, has been obtained to confirm the positive effects of the use of green roofs to improve the quality of urban spaces; the effectiveness of large-scale use of green roofs for consumers and the urban economy, including by reducing climate risks.
• tools have been created to promote specialized products and services;
• a framework and platforms have been created for conducting educational programs (from schoolchildren to advanced training of specialists), exchange of experience;
• A database has been created that allows studying the behavior and reactions of various representatives of Central Asia to the presented solutions and technologies, as well as the possibility of conducting regular research, including observations, measurements and surveys.
