The building of the Perm State Art Gallery | Ministry of Construction of the Perm Region

The new building of the Perm State Art Gallery is the first space in the history of the Perm Region designed and built specifically for the museum.

Construction was completed in December 2025. It was designed by the SPEECH Bureau team led by Sergey Choban, a world—renowned architect with experience in designing museum objects from the Tretyakov Gallery to museums in Rome and Berlin.

The area of the new building is 21.6 thousand square meters, which is seven times the area of the former premises in the Transfiguration Cathedral. The exhibition area has grown from four permanent exhibitions to 14 exhibition spaces. Thanks to this, for the first time, hundreds of exhibits will be presented in the new building, which were not previously shown or participated in exhibitions extremely rarely.

The location for the new gallery building was not chosen by chance. The territory of the former wagon repair plant (the historical "Shpagin Plant") is the founding site of Perm.Thus, the museum finds itself at the birth point of the city, which creates a unique semantic dialogue between the collection and the historical landscape.

The architectural project combines a new five-storey building and three restored historical buildings of the former Shpagin factory into a single ensemble with covered walkways. This is a rare example where a new museum building is not only adjacent to the monuments of industrial architecture of the XIX century, but also organically weaves them into its structure.

The new building includes not only exhibition halls, but also the infrastructure that turns it into a full-fledged cultural center. There is an educational center with workshops, a hall for lectures and children's exhibitions, restoration workshops, an archive, a storage facility and a library.
