Academic building of the IRIT-RTF Ural Federal University | GORDEEV-DEMIDOV Architectural Bureau
The academic building of the Institute of Radio Electronics and Information Technologies of the Ural Federal University is oriented along the north-south axis and is built in blocks along a triangular section. In order to streamline the layout, a grid was developed based on an elongated hexagon that follows the shape of the window of the Melnikov House, paying tribute to the Russian avant-garde. The academic buildings follow a hexagonal grid and form an open structure that, like DNA molecules, connects into blocks. The hexagonal grid in the plan allows you to functionally use the entire space of the building site, while creating additional public areas. This universal modular solution can be adapted to any shape and purpose of the site.
The building is formed of blocks connected by public spaces. At the core of each block are bright atriums with overhead lights and coworking areas on the ground level. Seminar and lecture halls, laboratories, and computer labs are located around their perimeter. In addition, the project provides transformable classrooms, a conference hall for 700 people, and facilities for independent and project work by students. The entire space of the academic buildings is functional and designed so that students can comfortably relax or work on their assignments.
The interior of the complex is filled with light and greenery. The academic building is meridionally oriented, and due to the elongated shape of the cells, light enters the atriums from the west and east sides most of the day.
The volume of the academic building is surrounded by squares and outdoor public spaces. Exploited roofs are also included in the system of these spaces. Thanks to the unique modular structure, green areas are formed between the buildings, where classes can also be held during the warmer months.
